Newspapers are a major research source for political and social history as well as local studies and genealogy. Newspapers provide a valuable primary source, often publishing obituaries, marriage notices and birth announcements. Local newspapers also carry reports on sporting events, court cases and various local events.

The newspaper collection includes The Munster Express from 1860-2007, The Waterford News & Star from 1848-1999 and various other publications covering periods from as early as 1771.  All of these newspapers are available on microfilm in the Local Studies Department.

Library users can access the Irish Times Digital Archive free of charge at all branches of Waterford City Council Library Service through www.askaboutireland.ie. This digital archive contains the entire Irish Times newspaper from the first edition in 1859 to the present. It is fully indexed and searchable.
