The Local Studies Department is based at Central Library and is open during normal opening hours. The Local Studies collection is made up of books, newspapers, maps and ephemera about the history, geography, archaeology, genealogy and architecture of Waterford City and surrounding areas. Waterford City Council Library Service aims to continuously collect material relating to Waterford City.

Many of the books in the Local Studies Department are available to read, however, if you wish to view maps, microfilm or some rare books or if you require assistance with your research ring the main desk at Central Library 051 849975 to make a booking. All Local Studies material is for reference only.

Through working with researchers, teachers and students, staff at the Local Studies Department have produced a guide to the most used resources. This guide details all of the key sources available including newspapers, maps, directories and CD ROMs. It provides clear guidelines on how to understand the census returns as well as practical instructions on how to use the microfilm readers. It also suggests Waterford related books and websites to help you start your local history research. If you would like to have a copy of this guide emailed to you email localstudies@waterfordcity.ie.
