- Get started – no matter how young your child is – and keep it up
- Share books every day – even if it is only for a minute
- Point to the pictures and talk about the story
- Let your child pretend to read by holding the book and turning the pages
- Encourage your child to join in: rhymes and rhyming stories are especially good for this
- Don’t give up if your child doesn’t seem interested they may be tired or grumpy so try a different time of day, just after school/ nursery after tea or at bedtime.
- Keep it fairly short.
- Keep a place for your childs books – this makes them special
- Turn off the TV at story time, it helps focus on the story
- Have fun
