How can we prevent litter in Waterford City?

Did you know that there is a plan to manage litter in Waterford City? Each local authority is obliged to regularly prepare a Litter Management Plan for its own area. This plan addresses a number of issues relating to litter:

  1. It sets out objectives to prevent and control litter
  2. It outlines measures to encourage public awareness about litter
  3. The plan must also set out the various ways to achieve the objectives.

Waterford City Council is currently preparing a new Litter Management Plan for the next three years. The plan prioritises prevention, control measures and the enforcement of legislation. It also examines ways of improving litter collection, enforcement, education and awareness.

Stop Food Waste

Did you know that 1/3 of the food that we buy ends up in the bin? This habit can cost the average household up to €1,000 per year!

Nearly all this food waste is thrown in the bin and while some is composted, some of it ends up in the local landfill. In the landfill, rotting food decomposes to make methane and other gases - these are greenhouse gases. And food waste CAN be avoided.
