Rental Accommodation Unit

The Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS) caters for the accommodation needs of those who are in receipt of a rent supplement. Waterford City Council aims to fill the gap in housing needs by leasing accommodation from home owners on a long term basis.

If you would like to offer a property (or up to 3 properties) for the scheme, please contact our Rental Accommodation Unit at 051-849511. If you would like to offer more than 3 properties together for the scheme, please contact 051-849869.

Tenants will normally be in receipt of rent supplement for more than 18 months, and have a long-term housing need. This excludes asylum seekers or other non-nationals who do not have permission to remain in the state permanently. Also excluded from the scheme are students and persons in receipt of rent supplement as a “back to work” incentive.

Objective and Benefits of RAS
The primary objective of the scheme is for the local authority to cater for persons with a long term housing need.

Achievement of our objectives has the following benefits:

  • Minimise dependence on the rent supplement scheme.
  • Facilitate a social mix by providing a wider geographical spread of social housing.
  • Expand the amount of private rented accommodation available on a long-term basis for SWA/RS tenants through acquiring new accommodation.
  • Improvement of quality, suitability and usage of private rented accommodation.
  • Achieve better value for money in provision of accommodation for persons in need of long-term social housing.
  • Coordinate and integrate the efforts of local authorities, voluntary and cooperative housing bodies and the private sector in the provision of long-term housing supports.
