Pollution
Many households, businesses and farmers regularly burn their waste. This method of waste management is no longer acceptable and is now illegal. It is also illegal to sell bituminous coal within Waterford city. Anyone found doing so can be brought to court and fined.
The following types of burning are listed as illegal :
75% of dioxins produced in Ireland come from the uncontrolled burning of waste at low temperatures. Because the waste is burned at low temperatures, toxins are not destroyed. These pollutants are released into the air without treatment some of which are carcinogenic. Uncontrolled burning at low temperatures produces large amounts of smoke, which is a nuisance to neighbours.
It is an offence under both "The Air Pollution Act 1987" and "The Waste Management Act 1996".
