What is Noise Pollution ?

Noise pollution is defined as noise so loud and continuous/repeated and at times of the day, that it gives you reasonable cause for annoyance.

Neighbourhood noise is the main type of noise problem reported to Waterford City Council. This is neighbourhood type noise includes continuous noise from houses, local businesses or workshops.

What can steps can I take to solve this problem ?

  • It may be sufficient to make the creator of the noise aware of the fact that they are creating a nuisance and to come to an agreement or ask them to stop. If this is unsuccessful, you may then take your complaint to the District Court.
  •  A complainant must give notice to the person making the noise of the intention to make a formal complaint to the District Court.
  • He/she must then serve a notice on the alleged offender that a complaint is being made at least 7 day in advance of the complaint being made to the court.
  • The District Court will hear both sides of a complaint and where it finds in favour of the complainant it can order the person or body making the noise to reduce it to a specific level, to limit it to specified times, or to stop it altogether.
