Yellow Road Band in John Robert's Square

The Thomas Francis Meagher Fife and Drum Band take to John Roberts Square this
weekend for a recital of popular and historical favourites. Founded in Waterford in
1885 by the late Sam Barnes and the late Councillor Tom Cullen, the band has always
been affectionately known locally by its followers as The Yellow Road Band as the
band's headquarters are situated on the Lower Yellow Road.
During the bands lifetime, it has won many competitions. In 1959 the band won the
All Ireland Fife and Drum Contest going on to greater achievements the band won 1st
prize for Best Corps of Drums on six occasions since 1963. The last two wins were
in 1985 and 1986 in Limerick and Wexford respectively under the baton of Councillor
Pat Power. The band took home three cups from Limerick that year including Best
Overall Band.
In 1996 the Thomas Francis Meagher Fife and Drum Band traveled to New York for the
St. Patrick’s Day parade on 5th Avenue. In 1999 it Boston’s turn and in 2007 the
band returned to New York for the annual celebration.
Once an entirely male band, today the Thomas Francis Meagher Fife and Drum Band is
a unisex band, with a mixture of vibrant youth and great experience.
The Thomas Francis Meagher Fife and Drum Band play John Roberts Square at 2pm on
Saturday July 17th. See www.tfmeagher.webs.com

Seamus McJuggler
Self-styled GAA Circus All-Star Seamus McJuggler says he wants to put GAA on the

International stage, using only his raw skill, talent and sexual charisma. A man of

many parts: head, arms, legs and occasionally a unicycle Seamus has been wowing

crowds from Buttevant to Belfast. Claiming once to have juggled two girlfriends at

the same time Seamus was featured in the Irish Times as one of the Street Smarts.

Join him this Saturday in John Roberts Square from 3.15pm as he makes a one-man

mission to drag the GAA kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, with his brand

new show: McJuggler - G.A.A. Circus All-Star!

NUMBER THEORY LIVE CITY CENTRE GIG
Waterford underground cult heroes Number Theory will light up the Artbeat stage

this Saturday with a mixture of electronic, analogue and aural delights. Starting

at 4.30 Amy, Simon and Bota will deliver a soundscape that soars and swoops with

passionate abandon against a backdrop of digitally altered beats.
Number Theory are three people and several machines.
They're based in Waterford at present but are in fact, two Kildare men and a

Canadian.
They have been making music together under different guises for years but as Number

Theory since 2008.
To quote their site “Simon (guitar, bass, programming) is the knowledgeable one,

having studied jazz and the wearing of scarves prone to spontaneous cartwheeling

when excited. Bota (bass, programming) mangles the beats and loves a bit of WOMP in

the headholes. Likely to hoover the house when least expected and Amy (vocals,

synths) has a larynx fit for Joe Smith and can trigger Midi like a pro. Runs a

boulangerie in between songs during practice.” (Indeed Amy runs the Soma Garden

every Saturday on Lombard Street and bakes some of the best cakes in town!)
To date, Number Theory has created two EP's: 'ischaemia' and 'dysrhythmia'. Work is

being finalized on the next EP 'inanitia' and an album with the assistance of jazz

drummer, David Lyttle. They can also be seen and heard in the virtual world:

www.myspace.com/number.theory. Catch Number Theory this Saturday at 4.30pm in the White Tent in Blackfriars.

Artbeat is produced by Waterford City Council as part of the Summer City Programme.

All Artbeat events are ‘Free in’.

New time slot for Artbeat
A reminder that the Artbeat programme has moved to the new timeslot of 4.30pm in Blackfriars as and from from Saturday 10th July.
