The Social Inclusion Unit was established in 2002 and is part of a pilot programme being funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
The Social Inclusion Unit has a key role to play in supporting Waterford City Council in tackling social exclusion.
Role of the Social Inclusion Unit is as follows :
- Establish the facts, identify baseline data on the extent, nature and causes of poverty in the city.
- Promote social inclusion in the local authority.
- Support the work of Waterford City Development Board and the "Social Inclusion Measures Committee" and liase with agencies involved in social inclusion to ensure a co-ordinated approach is undertaken.
